This comes from Christopher Kessler who presented it in the Elders group as a very very early citation of mentalism and bizarre.
The manuscript dates from around 200 AD and has recently been made available to the public by the Vatican. The full title is Book IV of Hippolytus Refutation of All Heresies (Philosophumena). Chapters 28 to 41 describe performance specifics, including pre-show work, novel impression devices, Q&A, billet switching, stage illusions, and spirit writing, and effects of bizarre Magick. Book IV is the relevant one. A PDF version is available for free from the Vatican library: http://www.documentacatholicaomnia.eu/04z/z_0180-0254__Hippolytus_Romanus__The_Refutation_Of_All_Heresies_[Schaff]__EN.pdf.html

The most prolific serial killer in history. And he’s relatively unknown. A perfect subject for his horrible life and horrific death.

Another great entertaining lecture from Dr Finkel, the curator of the British Museum. This is on Divination in Mesopotamia. Don’t miss the discussion of using a steaming hot sheep’s liver!

This is unknown GOLD
In reality, the fictitious "Doctor Bataille" and the publication of Le Diable au XIXe Siècle were key pieces in what one awed journalist described as "the most colossal hoax of modern times".
The grand conductor behind this hoax? Leo Taxil: journalist, prankster, expelled Freemason and founding member of the French Anti-Clerical League.
For 12 years, Taxil weaved an intricate web of deception: publishing self-referencing texts under various identities, hiring his typist to play the part of a Luciferian Templar Mistress, faking his own conversion to Catholicism, and even meeting the Pope.
The Vatican played right into Taxil's hands: corroborating his "facts" and announcing that Freemasons were most assuredly guilty of satanic worship and conspiring to bring down the Church.
Which made it a tad awkward when Taxil then convened a press conference and gleefully revealed the entire affair to be a prank.
